Bill Gates gave an interesting, hour and a half long speech in 1989 at the University of Waterloo. It was recorded, but it hasn't been available in a digital format, on the Internet, until now. You can listen to the speech in MP3 format by clicking here (85MB).
In the talk, Bill Gates discusses the past, present and future. The speech was given at a very interesting time in the computer industry, because it was late enough that there was some interesting history to discuss and use to predict the future, but there were still many up and coming developments that had not yet transpired.

I recently had a chance to try out Ubuntu, and I have to say, I'm fairly impressed. Linux on the desktop has come a long way from what I remember many years ago. A few weeks ago, I suddenly recalled a childhood memory of some operating system other than Windows. When I asked my dad if this was true, or if it was just one of those blurry, semi-imagined memories, he told me that indeed we did have Linux installed at some point.

Yeah, some may think it's silly for me have coded my own blog, but I think I learned a lot from the experience. This is one of those times though where I wish I had comments, because lately, I've been contemplating something a little bit deeper.
A few weeks ago I dreamed about emotion being simulated. This is a concept I think I first heard about in "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep," one of the few fiction novels I've read in a sea of computer books. Would simulating an emotion even be possible?

What is a Free Resource?

Whenever I'm considering adding an idea for a web site to my "must create" list, I always like to make sure it meets a couple of my own personally defined specifications. One important consideration when starting any project is the resources it will consume, utilize, and exploit, and how efficiently it will be doing so. This is where something I like to call "free resources" come in. By free resource, I mean a couple of things:
- Monetary: How much, if anything, will this resource cost to acquire and keep?
- Domain: Is this something that anybody has the right to or could have the right to?
- Time: Who or what is acquiring the resource and how long will it take?
Let me start with the most obvious category of free, the monetary factor.
Why Social Networking Sites Aren't Representative of Real Social Networks

social network social networking real world random graph scale-free ideas strong weak links
Social networking sites can provide rewarding experiences because of their pragmatic approach to socialization and they can also be awkward for the same reason. I say this because I think the topology of the network is very straightforward - you're either friends with a person or you're not. On a site like Facebook (and some others I'm sure that I'm just not aware of), you're at least able to add some information that describes the relationship you share with another person. This doesn't help describe the network though, it just helps the end user.
Almost every person in the world is connected to any other person by a graph width of no more than six degrees.

Most of you probably know by now that Amazon.com has started an online grocery store, not too dissimilar from the ones of the .com days. Amazon has been moving in some strange directions lately, such as with the Amazon.com Fishbowl, a sort of media service video thingy... It feels out of place to say the least. In this case however, it seems as though the world is now ready to order groceries online, and despite Amazon trying such weird new things, the grocery store seems to be working.

BigBackgrounds.com was started with the intent of providing a large number of free desktop wallpapers in the widest variety of resolutions possible. That journey won't be over anytime in the foreseeable future, but today, BigBackgrounds has hit a milestone of success. That's right, today marks the 150th background that has been uploaded since the start of the site! If you do the math, (128 single screen backgrounds * 14 resolutions) + (22 dual screen backgrounds * 8 resolutions), you'll find that, across the entire site, there are 1,968 images up for download!
While we're on the topic, it's worth mentioning the global audience that BigBackgrounds.com has achieved.

In case you haven't heard, Intel launched thier all new line of processors today, the Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Duo Extreme Edition. Intel has been using the NetBurst Microarchitecture for a very long time, but today, the Core Microarchitecture has been introduced to the world. Just how good is it? Well, mind blowing hardly does it justice.
These processors are amazing, and rival AMD no longer has the lead, not by a longshot.

Hey everyone,
I'm back from my trip to Boston, and what a good trip it was. Maybe I should think about creating a little photo gallery for my about page. Actually, maybe I should think about posting a picture of myself there in the first place so you can all see how big my head is (literally).
On my trip, I took a lot of pictures and did lots of fun things. I did not however, calmly let the days pass by without doing any work or thinking.

So long!
